18th annual Kansas City Heart Rhythm Symposium featured international experts

Overland Park, Kan. — More than 600 cardiologists, electrophysiologists and other healthcare professionals from across the United States and around the globe recently gathered in Kansas City and virtually for the 18th Annual Kansas City Heart Rhythm Symposium (KCHRS), an intensive two-day electrophysiology-focused medical education event hosted by the Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute at HCA Midwest Health.  The Symposium included a record attendance with guests from nearly 40 countries.

This year’s symposium featured Francis E. Marchlinski, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who was honored with the Pioneer in Electrophysiology Award for his groundbreaking contributions to the field. Dr. Marchlinski also delivered a special Grand Rounds lecture at Overland Park Regional Medical Center on “VT Mapping/Ablations in Arrhythmogenic RV Cardiomyopathy: Challenging the Dogma to Improve Outcomes” ahead of the symposium.

Cardiologists from HCA Midwest Health and the Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute at HCA Midwest Health — leaders in education and innovation in heart rhythm disorders in the region and the nation — were among the symposium presenters. HCA Midwest Health is Kansas City’s largest healthcare provider.

Electrophysiology is the study and treatment of the heart’s electrical system, which controls the rhythm of heartbeats. More than 10 million American adults — nearly 5% of the U.S. population — are estimated to be living with atrial fibrillation. For these patients, advances in electrophysiology provide life-saving options to diagnose, treat and manage conditions that can lead to stroke, heart failure and sudden cardiac death. As a regional and national leader in electrophysiology, HCA Midwest Health and the Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute are at the forefront of delivering innovative treatments, improving outcomes, and enhancing the quality of life for patients.

Attendees earned more than 14 CME, CEU and CNU credits while engaging with leading experts from world-renowned institutions, including Cedars-Sinai, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute.

“Every year, this symposium convenes the brightest minds in electrophysiology to share innovations, clinical evidence and new treatment guidelines that advance patient care,” said Dhanunjaya “DJ” Lakkireddy, MD, Executive Medical Director of the Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute. “Our goal is to provide a global forum that improves outcomes for patients living with atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, heart failure and other complex rhythm disorders.”

“Hosting the Kansas City Heart Rhythm Symposium reflects HCA Midwest Health’s commitment to clinical excellence and education,” said Eric Benink, MD, HCA Midwest Health Chief Medical Officer. “We are proud to support the exchange of knowledge that directly impacts how physicians and providers care for patients in our community and beyond.”

Symposium sessions addressed timely and complex topics, including atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, dysautonomia, and emerging digital health tools.
